Abstract

Disc bulge is a common spinal condition that can range from causing mild discomfort to severe pain and functional limitations, primarily due to nerve root compression that affects an individual's mobility. In Ayurveda, this condition is considered a Vata-vitiated disorder, marked by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve. It typically impacts the lower back, hips, and legs and is associated with symptoms such as numbness, tingling sensations, and muscle weakness. This case study focuses on a 55-year-old female patient diagnosed with a lumbar disc bulge accompanied by a posterior annular tear. The patient reported persistent lower back pain radiating to the lower extremities, worsened by physical activity, for over a year. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) revealed disc bulges at the L3-L4, L4-L5, and L5-S1 levels, along with a posterior annular tear.Initial conservative management included physical therapy and lifestyle modifications. Ayurvedic treatment involved oral administration of Trayodashang Guggulu (2 tablets thrice daily), Punarnavadi Mandoor (2 tablets thrice daily), and Dashmool Kwath (40 mL twice daily). In addition, external therapies such as Sarvanga Abhyanga (oleation therapy) and Sarvanga Swedana (sudation therapy) were implemented. This study discusses the patient’s clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment protocol, and subsequent recovery, highlighting the effectiveness of integrative Ayurvedic management in treating lumbar disc bulge with an annular tear.
